External view 30th July 2017.The castle's origins date back to the 11th Century and has remained within the Berkeley family since they reconstructed it in the 12th century, except for a period of royal ownership by the Tudors. It is traditionally believed to have been the scene of the murder of King Edward II in 1327.
The detatched tower of St.Mary's a feature more commonly found on the European continent but rarely in England. The tower is 17th century, and stands on the site of an earlier church.Tower of St.Mary's Church 30th July 2017.
The home of Edward Jenner, The Chantry, Jenner's home in Berkeley for 38 years, is now a museum. Jenner inoculated local people, free of charge, in a one-room hut in the garden, which he called the "Temple of Vaccinia".
